Love is in the air!
Make sure your loved one knows they are cared for and loved! Provide them with a thoughtful way to celebrate the holiday! These are our five ways to make sure your loved one celebrates and is living in the present. Additionally, no matter your age, you can still celebrate the holidays to make the day fun, by celebrating them to the best of their abilities.
Valentine’s Day Activities for Seniors
First: Make or give them a card!
You can be a pen pal to your loved one and send them a card! This will help with their cognitive skills and they will have a card that will make their day! They will be able to practice their writing skills so they will not forget. If your loved one is bilingual, you can communicate with them in both languages. Write your message for them in both languages!
Second: Gift them fresh flowers to be displayed by their bed!
Seniors love fresh flowers that they can enjoy throughout their day! The fresh scent of the flowers will lift their spirits and fill them with joy! Be sure to include their favorite flowers and pick their favorite colors to make it extra special with a thoughtful gift.
Third: Stop by and spend time with them!
Something as simple as sitting with them and spending time with them will make their day with a surprise visit! Most Seniors are lonely and having company or someone to talk to them will boost their mood. Did you know that 32% of individuals ages 55 and over feel lonely? (National Institute of Health 2025). Spending time with them will help them not feel as lonely!
Fourth: Read them a love story or watch a romantic movie with them!
Read to them and watch a movie with them to pass the time in an entertaining way! See our recommended movie listings to watch together. Instead of watching the same movie, be sure to try out new ones and ask them questions along the way to keep them engaged.
Fifth: Have them do a Valentine’s word search!
Print out a Valentine’s word search to put their cognitive skills to the test! They can utilize their memory and practice their words and spelling! This is a fun activity to do while in bed, on the couch, or at a dining room table. If your loved one does not like word searches, you can also do coloring books to keep up their creativity and art skills.
Lastly: Play their favorite love songs!
Have them sing to their favorite love songs and listen to some enjoyable music; rather than sitting in silence. This will boost their mood and they can listen to the words of the song. After they are done singing you can also take a pause and ask them to recall some of the lyrics for memory recall!
