February is Heart Awareness Month!
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for Women and is the number 1 killer of people in the U.S.? (American Heart Association, 2025). Further, a lot of these deaths can be preventable by taking precautions and incorporating heart healthy tips into our routines. It can take only a couple of minutes a day to prevent a life-long illness! Let’s invest our time wisely by investing into our health!
Purpose Driven Home Health is dedicated to keeping your loved one healthy and cared for! This month’s blog will provide you tips and featured resources to know how to better take care of your loved one’s heart health. In addition, make sure to wear red on Friday, February 7th, 2025 to show your support for heart disease day!
Heart Healthy Tips for Bakersfield and Kern County Seniors:
- Do light cardio activities such as dancing in a chair to increase your cardio! Other cardio activities that are Senior friendly can be tai chi, yoga, and meditation. - Get at least 7 – 9 hours of sleep. According to the National Institute on Aging, “Older people tend to sleep earlier an get p earlier than when they were younger” (National Institute on Aging, 2025).

- Secondly, reduce stress levels and take breaks. Give yourself patience and make time for much needed breaks!
- Also, keep your doctor’s appointments and medications as part of your self routine. Make sure that you do not miss your yearly physical and that you attend the necessary doctor’s appointments that are important for your health.
- Make it your goal of doing 150 minutes of physical activity each week. Even if you do not reach this goal; it is always important to get in as many minutes of physical activity in as possible to keep your heart healthy and in shape!
- Finally, educate yourself to know your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers level numbers are. These numbers can keep you informed about your health and can prevent a health problem from occurring! Monitor your numbers because they will provide you with important health information and can signal if there is a potential health concern.
