January Blues
- Have you noticed that your loved one is experiencing the January blues and appears to be unhappy or lonely?
- Did you know that around 13.2% of adults aged 65 and older experience clinically significant symptoms of depression?
- If this is true, do not feel alone! Many Seniors can develop sadness during the winter months.
- One way to help keep your Senior happy is to dance the January blues away!
Then, be sure to keep your loved one happy by keeping them physically active! Dancing can provide health benefits such as mental and physical wellness! Dancing can reduce the risk of falls by exercising the core muscles that help provide stability and balance. As a result dancing was associated with a 76% reduced risk of dementia (Albert Einstein College of Medicine, 2025). Let’s help get our Seniors moving and happy! Dancing can be a social activity and a healthy exercise activity.
Dance & Health Benefits
With the exception of body composition, improvements were seen for 60% to 90% of measurements in the other categories of physical health measurement—flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, balance, cardiovascular endurance, and cognitive function. Lack of improvement in body composition is perhaps not surprising. Older adults on average increase 7.5% of their body fat mass and decrease 2% of the fat-free body mass per decade, even with moderate sports or recreational activity – (National Institute of Health, 2025).
Let’s get your loved one dancing and happy! Finally, be sure they taker short breaks during their dancing activity and drink plenty of water.
