Bakersfield Seniors: Let’s Keep Thanksgiving and the Holidays Healthy; Yet Delicious!

Do you have a loved one that wants to enjoy the holiday festivities; but struggle to celebrate the Thanksgiving and upcoming holidays in a healthy way? Or are you a senior that wants to enjoy the festivities of the holidays and have the holiday meals be healthy; yet delicious?

If so, then this blog post is for you! We will feature our top 5 healthy; yet delicious Thanksgiving and holiday related dishes for our seniors!

Dish 1: Herb Roasted Turkey

This lean protein related dish will be a very healthy; yet delicious option for your loved one! Just roast a slice of turkey breast and add herb seasoning and you will have yourself a dish that will add proteins to your loved one’s diets.

Dish 2: Real Cranberry Sauce

Avoid high sugar levels with canned cranberry sauce! Get a bag of whole cranberries, boil them in water or organic fruit juice, such as apple juice, add sliced apples and pears; and you will have yourself a very delicious yet healthy side dish. Be sure to balance out the amount of cranberries because adding too many can make it too tart.

Dish 3: Roasted Vegetables

Roast squashes, carrots, and root related vegetables for a festive holiday dish. Just roast the veggies with a minimal amount of butter and salt and pepper and you will have yourself a dish that will provide necessary vitamins and minerals.

Dish 4: Baked Apples

Apples can help control digestion, lower cholesterol levels, and can ease symptoms of Alzheimer’s. It will also be a healthy substitute for dessert and can be a healthy way to enjoy a sweet dish.

Dish 5: Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes contain beta-carotene which can help the immune system during the holiday season and can reduce the risk of cancer. This can be a simple dish of sweet potato, unsalted butter, and a touch of cinnamon to create a flavorful; yet enjoyable dish. Add walnuts, on top for garnishing and this will add protein to the dish!

Eating healthy should always be a regular habit, even during the holidays. As a caregiver, it can be difficult to keep the holidays healthy, but it is very important to stick to your loved one’s diets. Caregivers play a vital role in ensuring that their loved one sticks to their diets. Eating healthy can be very impactful to their health! The holidays are more than just a time for decorations and gifts; it is a meaningful celebration where seniors gather with their loved ones and take the time to appreciate and give thanks for the blessings and memories created during the entire year.  Let’s appreciate our seniors by cooking them holiday meals that will align with their health diets; yet be delicious for them to enjoy and partake in the holiday in a healthy way!
